Basmati Rice is a
long aromatic rice grown only in India & Pakistan world over. It
has extra long slender grain which elongates more than twice of its
original size upon cooking. Basmati Rice is unique among other aromatic

and superior aroma which literally makes it King of Rice. Agro- climatic
conditions of the specific geographical area and method of harvesting,
processing and aging attribute these characteristic features to Basmati
rice.

May 2010 - As the production for the current year has increased by 50%,
there is oversupply of Basmati rice in Indian market which lead to fall
in prices. The carryover stock for current year is around 3 lakh tonnes
but for next year it is estimated to be five times higher at 1.5 million
tonnes. Pusa 1121 Basmati rice price is getting quoted at around US$ 975-1125
per ton quite above the minimum export price of US$ 900. Pakistan's export
this year are approximately at 80000 tonnes per month with its Basmati
prices getting quoted well below Indian origin at US$ 850. The international
demand and production are the major factors influencing the basmati rice
prices.
September 2010 - After rising significantly during last fiscal because
of sudden rise in demand from Iran, India's basmati rice exports are expected
to grow moderately in the range of 10% during the current financial year
April 2010-March 2011.The crop damage in Pakistan will divert more demand
towards India. India and Pakistan are the only suppliers in Basmati market
in the world. Indian production is also expected to be higher during current
kharif season because of more than 15% increase in acreage. Last year
the country produced an estimated 4.5 million tonne of basmati rice. According
to Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority
(Apeda), export of the premium aromatic rice increased by a hefty 44%
to 2.3 million tonne in 2009-10 from 1.6 million tonne achieved in 2008-09.There
is also pressure from different quarters on the government to open up
non basmati rice exports.
