Fenugreek seed is the ripe fruit of an annual herb having light
green leaves. It is brownish - yellow in color. Fenugreek which is a native
of South Eastern Europe and West Asia is now also cultivated in India,
latin America (Argentina), Egypt and Mediterranean countries (France,
Morocco and Lebanon). In India it is mainly grown in the states
of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and
Punjab. It is also known as methi in India.
Fenugreek is mainly used as spice. It is also used in powder form
to garnish and flavourise different dishes. It is one of the most important
ingredient in curry powder. Fenugreek is also known to have medicinal
values. In India, it is known to be consumed for joints. Fenugreek oil
is mainly used as an ingredient in hair tonics. Fenugreek seeds are also
used in pickles in India. The seeds have the bitter taste but with roasting
it can be reduced.
The major destination for fenugreek is U.S., E.U., Middle east,
Japan, Malalysia, Singapore etc. It is exported in seeds as well as powdered
form. Its powder is preferred in consumer packing of 50g and 100g.
