Garbanzo Beans (Chickpeas)

Chickpeas (chana) also known as garbanzo beans are highly nutritious due to their high protein content. India is the biggest producer of chickpeas in world. Other major producers are Pakistan, Australia and Turkey. It is mainly sown during Nov-Dec and harvesting is done in March-April. Basically chickpeas are classified into two types - Desi and Kabuli with 85% of the produce in the world being desi.

India is the largest consumer too of chickpeas in world. As local production itself is not sufficient to meet its consumption demand it imports chickpeas mainly from Canada, Australia and Burma.

The main price determining factor for chickpeas are total global and domestic output, local demand, output and prices of other pulses and import requirements.

23rd Oct - The locally produced garbanzo beans were at US$ 720-1040 depending on sizes whereas the imported ones were as usd 1000-1040 and imported bolder variety at usd 1100-1120 pmt in Mumbai wholesale market. The prices have not changed much in Indian market for chickpeas but with the rupee depriciation, the overseas exporters will have to reduce their prices to remain competitive for Indian markets and attract indian importers.

8th Oct - The imported garbanzo beans were in the range of usd 1015-1055 while bolder vareity was at 1120-1140 in Mumbai wholesale market. The local variety for chickpeas was available at usd 795-1055 for different sizes. Australian variety is getting offered for different sizes of 7,8 and 9 mm in the range of usd 400-650 cnf mumbai.

24th Sep - The prices for local kabuli chickpeas in Mumbai wholesale market were at US$ 780-1125 for different grades whereas the imported garbanzo beans were available for usd 1080-1125. The bolder imported chickpeas were for 1090-1210.
