Peanut, Peanut Meal & Oil

Peanut is one of the major oilseed of India grown mainly in Western and southern part of the country. Its production depends heavily on weather conditions and prices of other competing crops. Peanut is also referred as Groundnut. India is the one of the largest producer and exporter of peanut besides China, Argentina, U.S., Vietnam.

Peanut is mainly sown during May-June and the meal is normally available for export by mid-November. The seeds are crushed to obtain oil and oilcake which is further solvent extracted to obtain its

meal. Peanut meal / Groundnut Extraction is considered as high protein meal for it contains 45%-50% of protein in it. Peanut meal is a very good vegetable protein for animal feed whereas peanut kernels are used for direct consumption. Peanut oil / groundnut oil is very popular medium of cooking oil in India.

Far East Asia, Gulf and EU are the major markets for peanut kernels. For meal China, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam are the major buyers and for year 2006-07 Chilean market also had good demand. Peanut oil is exported in limited quantity but right now govt. of India has put ban on export of edible oils.

Peanut prices mainly depends upon the production, export demand and prices of other oilseeds and edible oils. Peanut meal prices mainly move in conjuction with rapeseed meal and soybean meal.

The prices remained on the same level.

The prices for new crop peanut meal too were down as sbm is down considerably. The new crop shipments usually are from November onwards.

The peanut prices have improved this month mainly due to good export demand. The meal rates are on par with soymeal in local markets so the demand for it may be low unless it is at discount to sbm. The peanut oil prices in the major wholesale markets of Mumbai and Rajkot were at usd 1260-1270 and 1195-1205 respectively.

30th Sep - With the new peanut crop nearby, the new meal shall be ready for shipment from Novemeber onwards. Soymeal is right now at 355-360. The prices for new crop peanut meal remains at usd 60-80 below than sbm.

21st July - US$ 390-395
The prices of peanut meal have moved up in conjunction with sbm.

26th June - US$ 370-374
The peanut meal prices showed the jump as peanut pricres have moved up and also due to positive movement of soybean meal.

16th June - US$ 350-353
This time peanut meal prices moved upwards alongwith other oilmeals which all are lifted up by soy meal.

12th June - US$ 340-343

Its an irony that though soybean and rapeseed meal prices have increased during the period, peanut meal prices have dropped. Even peanut prices have increased in this week but meal dropped.

6th June

The prices have moved up in conjunction with soymeal.

3rd June
Peanut Meal - US$ 338-340

The prices once again slipped down.
