Red lentils are extremely nutritious and
healthy and one of the major sources of protein. They are known to be
easily digestible. In addition to protein it is also a good source for
iron. India is the largest producer of lentils in the world but Canada
is the biggest exporter. The sowing period in India is Nov-Dec whereas
harvested during March-April. It is mainly grown in the central part of
India.
India use to export red lentils in whole
and split form to Gulf, EU and other countries but due to its high local
demand it has put ban on export of lentils. It has to import lentils in
big quantity from Canada, U.S., Turkey etc.
The prices for red lentils mainly
depend upon the local production and demand, the prices of other pulses
and global production. India as a big consumer certainly influences the
international prices.
