Turmeric

India accounts for almost 80% of turmeric production and 60% of world exports. The local market too has very big demand for turmeric so just 5% of total production is left for export. US, UK, Gulf, Japan and Indians residing all over world are the major buyers for turmeric.

Turmeric, a nine-month crop, is harvested in Dec to March. Nowadays the farmers are reported to have shifted to crops like soybean, maize & cotton as turmeric is a nine-month crop while others are of short duration and can give better returns.

Turmeric is mainly used as spice and coloring agent. It is also getting used in cosmetic industry mainly for skin products range. Consumption of turmeric is also known to have health benfits. During marriage celebrations in India turmeric paste is applied on bride and groom's body.


Turmeric Prices

15th Oct - FAQ - US$ 875-925
EU Quality - US$ 925-975
Due to weaker export and local demand the prices of turmeric have shown the decline. The Oct futures is quoting at around usd 50 less than the spot market while other futures too are trading well below the spot prices showing the weaker trend in turmeric right now.

4th Sep - US$ 900-950
Turmeric has been showing the downward trend due to expectation of good produce and slack in export demand. It dipped more on export front due to further depriciation of rupee. Turmeric Oct. futures were down by around 4.5% in last couple of weeks and right now quoted down by 0.7% compared to spot prices.

20th August - US$ 960-1000
The turmeric prices have shown tremendous decline this month due to good monsoon in its growing region and lower local demand. It was down by around 11% this month in the local market and with the dollar too appreciating against rupee the export prices of the commodity showed quite a big decline. The October futures of commodity has declined by around 16% during the month of August.

31st July - US$ 1125-1175
The prices of turmeric may show some decline due to good rains in its main producing region.
